A flight has had return to Manchester after declaring an emergency.

Thomson flight BY2358 was just a short time into its flight to the Spanish island of Menorca when the pilot is said to have made a mayday call over Birmingham.

That was later downgraded to a less urgent "pan pan" call but the plane, which had around 160 passengers on board, turned around and immediately began the return journey to Manchester.

The reason for the emergency is not yet known though a passenger tweeted to say it that they had told it had been caused by a stabiliser issue.

The flight landed at the airport a short time ago, a spokesman confirmed.

He said airline and airport staff were working to ensure the passengers comfort before they continue their onward journey.

At least one other flight is said to have had to divert to Liverpool as a result of the unscheduled arrival.
