A Mahan Air Boeing 747 lost an engine on take off from Tehran Mehrabad with debris from the engine crashing into an urban part of the city.
The aircraft, bound for Bandar Abbas in the south of the country landed back at Mehrabad without any injury to the 426 passengers on board.
Reports say that part of the plane's engine number three fell off two minutes into the flight with some parts hitting the airframe.
Iranian journalists have claimed the engine then part fell into an urban area, but no one on the ground is thought to have been injured.
According to the airline, the aircraft had undergone all necessary safety checks and inspections prior to departure.
