A flight in America has been forced into an emergency landing after a passenger stood up and made "alarming" statements about the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York.

The jet, carrying 150 people, had to make a dramatic diversion in the U.S. today amid a terror scare after the passenger starting making "9/11 statements".

The man got up shortly after take-off, walked towards the First Class section and started making "alarming" comments about the September 11 atrocities in 2001.

The American Airlines flight bound for Philadelphia from Los Angeles was diverted to Phoenix.

After it landed safely at Phoenix Sky Harbor International airport, the man was taken to a psychiatric facility for evaluation, Sgt Vince Lewis said.

He added: "We had a situation where right after takeoff a passenger stood and walked to the first class section, where he stood at attention there and refused to take his seat.

"He began making statements that, although they were alarming and threatening in nature, gave the flight crew the indication (of possible mental health issues)."

The comments were about al-Qaida's deadly attacks on the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, which killed about 3,000 people.

He also reportedly referenced certain beliefs about the American government.

The flight, which departed Los Angeles International Airport at 8:38 a.m. Pacific Time, was carrying 150 passengers, three infants and six crew members, and was refuelled and allowed to continue on to Philadelphia, a spokesman for American Airlines said.

A spokeswoman for the Phoenix airport declined to comment.
