Lithuania’s three largest gateways, Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga, which operate under the same Lithuanian Airports state enterprise, have joined together to mark remember their symbolic beginning. The construction of Lithuania’s first airport – Vilnius – began 100 years ago in December 1915 on the same site as today’s facility.
A statement from the airport operator said the organisers of the anniversary events decided to recreate the “drive and energy characteristic of the first aviation enthusiasts in our country” by means of a quintet of Lithuanian jazz masters who performed at each airport.
Indrė Baltrušaitienė, Head of Communications and Marketing at Lithuanian Airports commented: “Jazz for the topic of aviation is not a random choice because jazz masters are somewhat similar to aviators. After all, the wish to fly is not possible without professional training; a good improvisation, as well, is impossible without musical talents and experience.”
The network of Lithuanian airports consists of three air gateways in Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga. During 2014 they handled 3.8 million passengers. Currently, 17 airlines operate regular flights to 55 destinations in 44 cities in Europe and beyond from Lithuanian airports. Six charter carriers also provide services.
