Norwegian has launched the UK’s first direct flight to Puerto Rico in almost in a decade as the low-cost carrier continues its rapid growth in Britain.

Norwegian, Europe’s third largest low-cost carrier, will operate flights to the United States’ territory of Puerto Rico, providing over 12,000 affordable seats to the Caribbean from £159 one way. The flights will operate between London Gatwick and the Puerto Rican capital of San Juan.

Puerto Rico is Norwegian’s sixth low-cost long-haul route to launch from Gatwick, alongside flights to New York, Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and a new route to Boston launching next summer. Two new routes were also launched from Birmingham Airport earlier this week, making Norwegian the fastest growing carrier at the West Midlands hub since introducing its first flights earlier this year.

Norwegian also operates from Edinburgh and Manchester and now carries almost four million UK passengers per year to 34 global destinations. Gatwick is the airline’s largest UK base with ten aircraft and over 400 employees.

Transport Minister Robert Goodwill said: “Our aviation industry is pivotal in maintaining the UK’s standing in the world and Norwegian’s new routes from Gatwick and Birmingham highlight the sector’s continuing success. We are committed to supporting the industry in its efforts to provide new connections for passengers and businesses and creating skilled jobs across the country.”

Norwegian CEO Bjorn Kjos said: “We are pleased to reintroduce direct flights between the UK and Puerto Rico for the first time in almost a decade, and to continue opening up affordable, long-haul destinations for British holidaymakers. Norwegian has been operating out of Gatwick full time since 2013, and since then we have seen rapid growth thanks to our unique network, new aircraft and combination of low-cost, high quality flights.”
