Nearly 400,000 air travelers moved through Southern California's Ontario International Airport (ONT) in January, 5.7% more than the same month a year ago. Cargo tonnage grew by the same percentage.

The number of domestic travelers exceeded 369,000 in January, almost 2% more than January last year, while the number of international passengers more than doubled to nearly 27,000 from 12,700 in 2018, an increase of 111%.

"Our customers continue to show great confidence in Ontario as an international aviation gateway," said Mark Thorpe, chief executive officer of the Ontario International Airport Authority. "Despite the impact of the federal government shutdown on air travel, Ontario continued its track record of steady gains proving again it is an appealing alternative for air travel in Southern California."

Air cargo also grew by 5.7% overall in January, with commercial freight and mail totaling more than 60,500 tons, up from 57,000 tons in January a year ago. Freight volume was more than 58,000 tons while mail shipments totaled more than 2,000 tons, increases of 5.8% and 3.1%, respectively.

Ontario International Airport (ONT) is the fastest growing airport in the United States, according to Global Traveler, a leading publication for frequent fliers. Located in the Inland Empire, ONT is approximately 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in the center of Southern California. It is a full-service airport with nonstop commercial jet service to 19 major airports in the U.S., Mexico and Taiwan, and connecting service to many domestic and international destinations. There is an average of 67 daily departures offered by nine air carriers. More information is available at www.flyOntario.com.
