An American Navy F-18 crashed on the runway at Bahrain's Muharraq International Airport Saturday.

The fighter had taken off from USS Nimitz, an aircraft carrier on duty in the Gulf and suffered an engine malfunction and diverted to Bahrain. Initially it has attempted to land at Sheikh Isa base but went on to the international airport where it touched down on the runway but could not stop. The pilot ejected – and was unharmed – as the aircraft continued the runway excursion.
The “uncomfortable landing” as it was described by a Navu spokesman, resulted in the aircraft ending in a nose up position, but largely intact.
The airport was closed to commercial traffic and flights were resumed after several hours, according to Bahrain’s Transport Ministry.
