Avflight, alongside Detroit City leadership, proudly celebrated the ribbon cutting of a new, state-of-the-art facility at Coleman A. Young International Airport (KDET) on Wednesday, June 3. The new Avflight FBO complex marks a major milestone in the airport’s ongoing revitalization efforts, strengthening Detroit’s aviation infrastructure while supporting economic development, business growth and increased connectivity for the region. During the ceremony, dignitaries including Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield, Airport Director Jason Watt, and Avflight Senior Vice President of Operations Joe Meszaros addressed attendees, highlighting the role the new facility will play in advancing the city’s vision for the airport and the surrounding community.
Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield commented: "Avflight's significant investment and long-term commitment to Coleman Young International Airport is an indication of the bright future our airport has ahead of it. The services and amenities Avflight will provide at this new facility will help make City Airport an increasingly popular destination for private aircraft, bringing visitors and investment to Detroit. It also is the first new facility to be built at the airport in 60 years and one of several opening this year."
Avflight Senior Vice President of Operations Joe Meszaros stated: “Today represents the culmination of a shared vision for Coleman A. Young International Airport. This facility strengthens Detroit’s aviation infrastructure while creating new opportunities for business, investment and connectivity. We’re proud to celebrate this milestone alongside our city partners and the community. When we broke ground on this project at the end of last June, we saw tremendous potential in Detroit and in this airport. Today, that vision is a reality. This new facility provides the modern services and amenities operators expect while reinforcing our long-term commitment to Detroit’s growth and future. We’re honored to be part of the airport’s ongoing transformation. This investment reflects our confidence in Detroit, and we look forward to serving pilots, passengers and businesses here for decades to come.”

Planned, designed and built by Avflight, the company’s multimillion-dollar investment underscores its long-term commitment to Detroit’s aviation future. The new complex features a 5,000-square-foot FBO terminal, a 20,000-square-foot heated hangar (able to easily accommodate aircraft up to a G700) and an attached, heated indoor parking garage for four passenger vehicles.
The 24/7 facility also features an inviting, open-concept lobby with a fireplace, a pilot’s lounge, two private sleep rooms for flight crew members, a conference room with full A/V and seating for six, and private tenant offices. The terminal is styled in Avflight’s signature modern aesthetic with industrial elements and sleek, yet comfortable, furnishings. Designed to serve general aviation aircraft with fuel and ground handling services, the complex reflects Avflight’s confidence in the continued growth and potential of Coleman A. Young International Airport as a premier gateway to the city.
The project builds on the momentum of significant city-led improvements to KDET, including a $3.5 million runway renovation, LED taxi lighting upgrades, and additional investments such as ramp pavement improvements, a new engineered material arresting system, a new control tower, airport beautification efforts, upgraded snow removal equipment and expanded educational partnerships aimed at fostering aviation careers among Detroit youth.
Avflight, which has operated at KDET since 2011, is committed to enhancing the KDET experience for customers and community members alike. Since arriving on the airfield, the company has expanded its capabilities, invested in modern infrastructure and remains committed to fostering educational opportunities and community partnerships that benefit both the aviation industry and Detroit residents.
