RotorTechnics expands with major investment and training academy plans

RotorTechnics, a Maltese helicopter maintenance and engineering company, has unveiled a major expansion programme aimed at addressing Europe’s growing demand for rotary-wing services. RotorTechnics is investing in new maintenance facilities, cutting-edge equipment, certified training academy for helicopter engineers. Founded in 2016, RotorTechnics has rapidly established itself as a regional leader in helicopter MRO, servicing operators across governments, NGO, and private sectors. The company has already invested over €1.5 million in tooling and infrastructure and plans an additional €1.2 million over the next 18 months to expand maintenance lines and workforce capacity.

RotorTechnics CEO Simon Camilleri commented: “Our journey started in 2016. We used to rely on third parties, but we wanted to do it all on our own. In a relatively short period, we secured our operating certificate — faster than expected. Nothing happens without our team. Everyone is equally important, and that’s what makes us different.” 

Charles Pace, Director General of the Civil Aviation Directorate stated: “RotorTechnics is a prime example of how local investment can create a globally competitive aviation operation.”

Prime Minister Robert Abela also welcomed the launch, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting Malta’s aviation sector: “This is an industry with real growth potential. We are building an economy that focuses on innovation, skills, and international collaboration, and RotorTechnics exemplifies that vision.”

RotorTechnics is seeking Part 147 approval to launch a dedicated training academy for helicopter engineers, in collaboration with MCAST (Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology) and the University of Malta. The academy will nurture local talent while attracting international students, helping to address Europe’s shortage of skilled rotary-wing technicians.

Malta is rapidly establishing itself as a Mediterranean hub for helicopter operations, combining regulatory stability, skilled workforce potential, and infrastructure. RotorTechnics’ sister company, Gulf Med Aviation Services, operates nine helicopters from four bases, providing air ambulance, emergency response, and specialist services across the region.

With its dual focus on operational excellence and technical capability, RotorTechnics is positioning Malta as a strategic base for MRO, training, and commercial rotary-wing services — offering international operators a high-quality, fully integrated hub in the heart of the Mediterranean.
