Boston MedFlight, the internationally recognized nonprofit provider of critical care transport services, has signed an agreement with Airbus Helicopters for three new H145 helicopters as part of its ongoing fleet modernization and expansion strategy across New England. With this latest acquisition, the organization's total number of Airbus H145 purchases rises to 12 aircraft.
For more than four decades, Boston MedFlight has delivered lifesaving transport services to over 115,000 patients, supported by a longstanding partnership with Airbus. Operating an exclusively Airbus fleet, the organization will use the new twin-engine H145 helicopters to replace aging aircraft while supporting measured fleet growth. The additions will further enhance Boston MedFlight’s capacity to provide rapid, high-level medical transport between healthcare facilities and directly from emergency scenes, ensuring critical patients receive timely access to specialized care.
Maura Hughes, CEO of Boston MedFlight commented: “These aircraft are essential to our mission, enabling our skilled pilots to safely transport patients while our medical crews focus on providing lifesaving critical care in transit. We’ve operated a variety of aircraft over the years, and the H145 continues to be the right fit for our mission today. It meets the demands of flying throughout New England, while offering the cabin space and flexibility to outfit the aircraft with the equipment we need to care for our patients.”
Bart Reijnen, Head of the North America region at Airbus Helicopters stated: “Boston MedFlight performs vital, lifesaving missions every day, and Airbus is honored to support their essential work. The five-bladed H145 delivers the ideal combination of cabin volume, smooth flight characteristics and Helionix safety technology that critical care crews need to operate safely and effectively in challenging environments.”
The latest version of Airbus’ best-selling H145 light twin-engine helicopter features an advanced five-bladed bearingless rotor system that boosts payload capacity by 150 kg (330 lbs) while reducing maintenance requirements and delivering a smoother flight experience for both patients and medical crews. Powered by twin Safran Arriel 2E engines equipped with dual-channel FADEC, the aircraft also incorporates the Airbus Helionix avionics suite and a high-performance four-axis autopilot, enhancing operational safety and easing pilot workload.
With more than 1,800 helicopters from the H145 family in service worldwide and over 8.9 million flight hours accumulated across emergency medical services, public safety, and civil operations, the platform has established itself as a proven industry benchmark. Boston MedFlight’s three new H145s will seamlessly integrate into its existing Airbus fleet, strengthening its 24/7 emergency medical transport capabilities and complementing the organization’s specialized critical care ground transportation network.
