Aviation expert Samudra Sukardi said that he agrees with the ratings given by AirlineRatings.com that named eight of the country’s airlines as the least safe in the world.

"It’s true. The fact is, we have accidents and others,” Samudra to Tempo on Saturday (9/1).

Samudra considered that the low rating could not be separated from the government’s role, which in this case is the Directorate General of Air Transportation of the Transportation Ministry.

In the meantime, Indonesia’s aviation safety was also downgraded to Category 2, signaling a lack of regulation necessary to oversee air carriers in accordance with minimum international standards.

"Our aviation safety now belongs to Category 2 by ICAO and FAA. It means that we have not met international safety standard. If the regulator is under Category 2, what about the airlines,” he said.

According to Samudra, Indonesia’s aviation safety should belong to Category I; yet, ICAO found 600 findings and the figure rose from the previous year, who only saw 125 findings that have been audited.
