An American Airlines jet was forced to land in Brazil after a mystery illness struck for second time in a week, leaving four passengers and crew light-headed.

The American Airlines flight was travelling from Brazil to the United States when three members of staff became ill, the Mirror reported.

It was the second time this week American Airlines was forced to ground a plane after a mystery illness on board.

Flight 904 had left Rio de Janeiro for Miami on Friday (NZT) but was forced land in Brasilia, Brazil.

Four people complained of lightheadedness sparking fears of contaminated air on board.

A source said: "We made an emergency landing because crew members and passengers passed out and became unwell."

"It sounds exactly like what happened on the other flight with us not being allowed off the plane for two hours. One of the crew said something about oven cleaner reacting badly."
