In the wake of last week’s crash of a Flydubai jet, a Russian official has called for banning Boeing 737s from the country’s commercial passenger routes, according to a report in Izvestia, a Moscow-based newspaper.

A member of Russia’s Civic Chamber, Artem Kiryanov, has asked the country’s Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) to ban the popular airplane.

He accused Boeing of ignoring safety issues, Izvestia reported.

“We believe that the company is not completely ethically working in the interests of consumers, therefore, we do not intend to wait until the end of the investigation into tragedy in Rostov-on-Don,” he said.

Russians “can still fly” on an Airbus plane or a domestically-produced jetliner, he said.

A Flydubai 737 with 62 people on board crashed while trying to land in heavy winds in the southern Russian city.
