Aircraft: Airplanes

The first jet to land at St Helena Airport was a business aircraft chartered by Air Safety Support International (ASSI) to bring its team to assess the airport.

The aircraft departed from Lanseria Airport on Sunday morning with a refuelling stop at Walvis Bay.

On board were three pilots and eight passengers, with the ASSI team led by senior aerodrome inspector, Justin Rothwell.

The team will now perform an audit on the airport as part of the certification process, and the Bombardier jet will conduct multiple flights to assess Air Traffic Control, before returning to the UK.

In 2011, the St Helena Government signed a Design, Build and Operate (DBO) contract with Basil Read, aiming to provide air services to St Helena, fulfilling the UK Government’s commitment to maintaining access.
