Operational data on the Airport performance show that this May, Riga International Airport handled 474 thousand passengers or 66 % of the pre-pandemic period. The Airport has served 1.67 million passengers since the beginning of the year. The share of direct passengers was 84 % in May, while 16 % of passengers used Riga as a transit point in May. A similar ratio of direct and transit passengers is to be observed in the first five months of the year.
London, Antalya, Helsinki, Oslo, and Tallinn were the most popular destinations from Riga in May. Almost half – 48 % of the passengers handled in May or 228 thousand were carried by the national airline airBaltic, followed by Ryanair with almost 33 % or 155 thousand passengers.
Compared to May 2021, the number of passengers handled at the Airport has increased almost 5.6 times – a year ago, when travel restrictions were still in force, the Airport served just over 85 thousand passengers.
Air cargo turnover continues to be affected by the war in Ukraine and the global sanctions against Russia and Belarus. In May, 1533 tonnes of air cargo were handled at Riga Airport, which is one third less than in May 2019 (2129 tonnes).
