Six new FAI World Air Games champions were crowned yesterday at the Skydive Dubai Palm Dropzone in Dubai.

Brian de Chastel, from Australia, stepped up to accept the gold for the Aeromodelling F3T, or Semi Scale Pylon Racing, competition.

"This is the peak," he said. "I didn't even dare to dream about this. It's too much."

Latvian Aleksandrs Prokofjevs was awarded the gold medal in the F2D Combat Model Aircraft contest.

"Thanks to my dad, who builds the best planes in the world," he said.

And acro paragliders Tim Alongi (FRA), Théo de Blic (FRA) and Horacio Llorens (ESP) climbed to the top of the podium to receive their gold medals for the Solo and Synchro Paragliding Aerobatics events.

New Solo champion Alongi, 24, put his success down to taking a few risks on the day.

“I took some risks performing manoeuvres I've only done a few times before, and it paid off,” he said. "I just try to fly my own style."

Llorens, one half of Twisted Boys synchronised team, said that it was about keeping your nerve under pressure.

"You have to fly as well in competition as you do in training,” he said.
