Boeing and Avolon have finalized an order for 140 Boeing 737-10 aircraft, establishing a record for the largest 737 MAX purchase by a leasing company. The agreement boosts Avolon’s Boeing backlog to more than 240 unfilled aircraft orders. With lessors increasingly turning to larger narrowbody jets, the 737-10 has gained significant traction in 2026, attracting more than 230 commitments from leasing firms. The aircraft will support Avolon’s efforts to meet airline demand for increased capacity while leveraging the versatility and efficiency of the 737 MAX family.
Avolon CEO Andy Cronin commented: "We continue to see strong demand for new technology aircraft, and this order further strengthens our long-term delivery pipeline. The 737-10 combines outstanding economics with the capacity airlines increasingly require, making it one of the most attractive aircraft in its class. This agreement enhances our ability to support airline growth and fleet renewal well into the next decade, while further strengthening our long-standing partnership with Boeing."
Brad McMullen, Boeing senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing stated: "Avolon's growing and diverse 737 MAX portfolio enables its airline customers to modernize fleets with aircraft that reduce emissions and operating costs, improve route economics and support long-term sustainability goals. As long-term travel demand is expected to remain strong, we stand ready to support lessors expanding their single-aisle portfolios with fuel-efficient jets that can operate across diverse route networks."
The Boeing 737 remains a cornerstone of the global aircraft leasing market, accounting for roughly 30% of all financed aircraft thanks to its broad operator base and competitive operating economics. The 737-10, the largest variant in the 737 MAX family, delivers industry-leading per-seat efficiency among single-aisle aircraft, accommodating up to 230 passengers with a range of 3,100 nautical miles (5,740 km).
Driven by forecast passenger traffic growth of approximately 4% annually over the next two decades, leasing companies are expanding their single-aisle portfolios to meet rising airline demand. Reflecting this trend, lessors have collectively placed orders for more than 1,450 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, representing around 20% of Boeing's total order backlog.
