SAS Scandinavian Airlines System and Lufthansa Technik AG will be working even more closely together in the future. Under a recently signed multi-year contract, the SAS Airbus A350 fleet will have its base maintenance layovers performed at Lufthansa Technik Malta starting in 2026. The Lufthansa Technik Group’s European Center of Excellence for widebody aircraft overhauls will thereby contribute its extensive expertise in servicing the latest generation of long-haul jets.
Following a single A350-900 base maintenance event from SAS at Lufthansa Technik Malta in May 2024, the airline has now decided to entrust additional aircraft of this type to the renowned MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) facility in the Mediterranean. The resulting contract covers two-, four- and six-year checks for the aircraft type, which has been the flagship of the SAS fleet since 2019 and typically connects the airline’s hub at the airport in Copenhagen-Kastrup, Denmark, with destinations in North America and Asia. The A350 fleet of SAS currently consists of four aircraft.

SAS and Lufthansa Technik already have a long-standing business relationship, with a wide range of services from an Aircraft Production Inspection Program (APIP) for the airline’s A320neos to a Total Component Support and engineering support for its entire fleet. The TCS will also make the supply of aircraft components during the recently agreed A350 layovers in Malta much smoother. In addition, the new base maintenance contract also provides for a certain degree of flexibility for supplementary services, such as aircraft modifications during the layovers.
