Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engine adds power to training programme for Emirates engineers

Emirates Engineering apprentices and personnel can now familiarise themselves first-hand with the mechanics and operations of the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 Engine. The engine was gifted to Emirates Engineering by Rolls-Royce during the Dubai Air Show, and comes almost a year before the Trent 900 will be put into regular passenger service on 50 of Emirates’ A380s.

The engine, which is currently on display at the Rolls-Royce stand at the Dubai Airshow exhibition hall, will be moved from Al Maktoum International-Dubai World Central (DWC) to the Emirates Engineering Training Facility at Dubai International Airport after the Airshow ends. Maintenance and Engineering staff will be provided with the opportunity for familiarisation and hands-on training, including the ability to perform tasks that would be difficult to access and perform on in-service aircraft. These include fan blade installation and component removal, amongst other tasks.

“The gift of this state-of-the-art engine speaks of the strong relationship between Rolls-Royce and Emirates, and we are grateful for the gift of this engine for our training programme. While our apprentices currently use a variety of methods to ensure they can maintain, repair and overhaul aircraft and engines, there is no substitute for hands on-training on advanced, modern technology like the Trent 900 Engine. We will be the only airline in the industry to have this engine in our facilities for training purposes, and this will build on the capabilities already in place for our existing and future engineers,” said Iain Lachlan, Emirates’ Divisional Senior Vice President, Engineering.

Earlier this year, Emirates and Rolls-Royce announced a landmark $9.2 billion contract to supply Trent 900 aircraft engines for 50 of the airline’s new A380s, which will be delivered beginning in late 2016.
