The Hellenic Ministry of National Defense has signed an agreement for the acquisition of three Embraer KC-390 Millennium multi-mission aircraft, with options for three additional units. The deal was concluded through a government-to-government partnership between Greece and Portugal, further strengthening European defence cooperation.
Under the agreement, the Hellenic Air Force is scheduled to receive its first KC-390 Millennium in 2027, significantly enhancing its strategic airlift and air-to-air refueling capabilities. The acquisition will also improve interoperability with NATO and allied forces, while providing access to shared European training, logistics, and support networks.
Bosco Da Costa Junior, President & CEO of Embraer Defense & Security commented: “We are honored by Greece's decision to acquire the KC-390 Millennium. This choice underscores the trust and confidence that leading NATO members place in our aircraft. This very important milestone further solidifies the aircraft's position as a preferred solution for military airlift among NATO allies. The KC-390's proven performance, reliability, and cost efficiency make it an ideal choice for nations seeking to enhance their operational capabilities.”
Greece becomes the seventh European operator to select the Embraer KC-390 Millennium, joining Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Sweden. The decision underscores the aircraft’s growing appeal among EU and NATO member states seeking a versatile and future-ready platform capable of meeting evolving defence and security requirements.
Beyond Europe, the KC-390 has been chosen by the air forces of Brazil, South Korea, Uzbekistan, the United Arab Emirates, and Colombia. Its expanding global customer base reflects confidence in the aircraft’s combination of operational flexibility, reliability, and performance, as well as its ability to integrate seamlessly into multinational missions and joint-force operations.
Developed as a 21st-century military transport aircraft, the KC-390 Millennium was designed with interoperability at its core. Advanced communications systems, digital avionics, and mission management capabilities enable efficient coordination across allied and coalition forces, supporting a broad spectrum of military and humanitarian operations.
The aircraft offers a payload capacity of up to 26 tonnes, outperforming many aircraft in its class while delivering higher speeds of up to 470 knots and extended range. Its mission versatility includes cargo and troop transport, airdrop operations, medical evacuation, search and rescue, aerial firefighting, and humanitarian relief missions. Designed to operate from austere and unpaved airstrips, the KC-390 can also be rapidly configured for air-to-air refuelling missions, serving both as a tanker and a receiver to further enhance operational flexibility.
