Beyond checklists and compliance: the leadership gap holding aviation back

Authentic leadership is no longer optional; it is the fuel aviation needs to remain resilient. We have all been thereEveryone has experienced it. Advocate Like a CaptainIf you’re a woman chasing leadership in aviation or aerospace, here’s the cold, hard truth: you’ll need to advocate for yourself loudly, early, and unapologetically.Start here: Say what you want. Don’t hint - declare. Track everything. Your hours, your wins, your rescues, your strategic saves. Keep the logbook tight. Build alliances. Find mentors and allies - but also be one. High heels & helidecks: confessions of a helicopter boss lady Part 1

Let me set the scene: It’s 0600 and I’m walking toward a helicopter, headset in one hand, checklist in the other, full flight uniform on. A rig worker squints at me and says, “Wait, you the pilot?” I smile. “Nope. I just dress like this to hand out snacks. The actual pilot’s inside my makeup case.” Welcome to offshore oil and gas aviation - where the platforms are swaying, the winds are howling, and the assumptions about women are stuck somewhere in 1953.From Couch Flights to Cockpit R...

About me:

I am an aviation professional with over 23 years of experience spanning helicopter operations, flight safety, regulatory oversight, and national aviation reform. I’ve had the honor of achieving several national firsts — including being Trinidad and Tobago’s first female helicopter pilot, first female helicopter captain, and first female Chief Pilot — milestones that have shaped my commitment to excellence and opened doors in an industry where few women lead.

Currently, I serve as a Flight Operations Inspector at the Trinidad and Tobago Civil Aviation Authority, where I focus on regulatory compliance, operational approvals, and aviation safety at the state level. My experience includes high-stakes offshore flight operations, oversight of military and civilian air services, and strategic input as a State Board Director guiding investment and governance decisions.

I hold an MSc in International Management (Oil & Gas) from the University of Liverpool, with advanced certifications from Harvard Law School Extension, Cornell University, USC, and IATA. My professional interests include developing the aerospace manuafcturing inductry in the region, ESG in aviation, sustainable fuels, clean energy, eVTOL innovation, and elevating safety and leadership standards across the sector.

I believe aviation should be safe, forward-thinking, and inclusive — and I’m passionate about helping shape a future where Caribbean aviation leads with both strength and vision.
