F/LIST is lighting up the skies by switching on its brand-new Lightshifter concept. Building on the magical F/LIST Shapeshifter technology, which transforms solid-state monuments into multiple applications, F/LIST is now morphing wood veneer surfaces to reveal integrated illumination technology to create unexpected textures, effects, and atmospheres in the cabin.

The Lightshifter is a completely new material concept that enables naturally oiled wood veneer to seamlessly expose light sources on demand. When activated, the solid wood veneer surface transforms into a canvas for the lighting effect, adding depth and dimension to the previously flat surface. Once the illumination is no longer required, the Lightshifter material returns to its original wood veneer structure, with no visible change. The function can be controlled through the cabin management system and operated by flight attendants on airliners or flight crew and passengers on business jets. The concept was initiated in response to customer requests for products that instantly transform flat surfaces into dramatic backgrounds with minimal human interaction.

Michael Mueller, Managing Director, F/LIST Aviation commented: “Our customers are always seeking new ways to enhance the cabin interior environment without adding bulky objects, technology hardware, or heavy components. The Lightshifter changes the cabin atmosphere without any visible presence, yet the customizable sequences featuring colors, light intensity, and more effects can augment the whole cabin ambience and travel experience. Imagine the bulkhead of a business jet or first-class cabin seamlessly transitioning from a flat wood appearance to a textured pattern, with inspiring illumination. This is the kind of creative experience we’re delivering to our customers. It provides a true differentiator for airlines and brings a new design dimension to business jet interiors.”

Patrick Domnanich, F/LIST Director Research & Development stated: “Once again, we are liberating the imagination with a never-before-seen concept, and we anticipate that customers will embrace the opportunity to surprise customers with the infinite possibilities the Lightshifter provides. Lightshifter supports the full spectrum of lighting requirements from providing cabin lighting without imposing fixtures to creating vivid light installations to complement branding, destinations, or customer preferences. We’re excited to see how customers apply the technology.”

The inspired technology necessitated the development of a completely new material combination that allows wood to transition from its natural state to another, while retaining its durable qualities. Hidden lighting incorporated into this adaptive material can serve as a light source for passengers or provide a dramatic backdrop or creative decor.

The Lightshifter was unveiled at the prestigious Red Cabin Business Jet and VIP Interior Conference Innovation Summit, co-hosted by F/LIST in Vienna. For the first time, the global business aviation community gathered in Austria, with more than 200 industry leaders and experts participating. The event provided a unique platform to exchange insights, foster collaboration, and showcase the innovations shaping the next generation of cabin interiors.

Developed in the company’s internal incubator, the F/LAB, the Lightshifter is a testament to F/LIST’s mission to challenge the status quo and lead the industry with pioneering interior design concepts.  The latest technology works in concert with F/LIST’s extensive wood veneer portfolio and is expected to appeal to airlines, OEMs, completion centers, and industrial designers seeking new and exciting ways to engage customers.
