A Delta Airlines  McDonnell Douglas MD-90, registration N959DN performing flight DL-1086 from Atlanta,GA to New York La Guardia,NY (U.S.) with 109 passengers and 6 crew, was enroute at FL310 about 160nm south of Washington Dulles,DC (U.S.) when the crew decided to divert to Washington reporting the right hand engine (V2528) had been shut down prompting ATC to inquire whether the aircraft would be able to perform right hand turns. While on approach to Dulles Airport maintaining 4000 feet the crew inquired about the weather at Baltimore and subsequently decided to land on Baltimore's runway 33L adivsing ATC that they did not have Dulles Airport in their FMS database, even though they had the paper approach plates they preferred to land on an aerodrome included in the FMS database. The aircraft was vectored for an approach to Baltimore's runway 33L where the aircraft landed safely about 20 minutes later.

The remainder of the flight was cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto other flights.

A passenger reported the right engine emitted a loud boom followed by the entire airframe shuddering.
