A passenger jet has been forced to make an emergency landing after a man tried to smash down the cockpit door before attempting to open two exits.

He was subdued by other travellers during the terrifying incident on a plane from Bucharest in Romania to the Norwegian city of Torp.

The man allegedly stood up and ranted in the cabin before running along the aisle and kicking the cockpit door.

He then tried to open two emergency exits before being "wrestled" to the ground by shocked passengers, according to reports.

The suspect was handed over to police after the Wizz Air flight was forced into an emergency landing in the Swedish city of Malmo.

He is being held on suspicion of violating aviation laws by endangering passengers.

One passenger said: "When something like this happens high up in the sky I do not think it is funny at all."

Officials are not thought to be probing a terror link and a second person was taken into custody on suspicion of drunkenness.

The cockpit door suspect is reportedly a 43-year-old Romanian citizen who lives in Norway.

The plane eventually landed safely and no injuries were reported.

After the September 11 attacks in 2001, airlines have mostly installed heavily reinforced cockpit doors meaning it is near impossible to break in.
