Aviation tycoon Declan Ryan has provided seed capital to a designer who makes furniture out of retired aircraft.

Ciara O'Toole - herself a pilot - has launched a collection of five pieces inspired by adventurer Amelia Earhart, who went missing over the Pacific in 1937. Ryan, son of Ryanair founder Tony Ryan, has provided backing through his company Irelandia.

One of O'Toole's pieces is a 12-seater conference or dining table crafted using the engine casing of a Boeing 737 as its base, with a titanium fuel access door set into the centre of the oval-shaped table top.

Another is a cabinet crafted from the leading edge of the wing of a Boeing 737, and a third is a credenza - a low cabinet - which has been created using the nose landing gear door of a Boeing 737 as its primary feature.

O'Toole designed the collection in tandem with Irish designer Shane Holland.

The pieces will be available for sale from next month, with commission-based work available on request.
