Heydar Aliyev International Airport handled 3.26 million passengers in 2016, which is a record in the history of civil aviation of Azerbaijan.

83.5% of passenger traffic was international traffic. In 2016 28 passenger airlines were flying to Azerbaijan's capital, including national carrier "Azerbaijan Airlines» (AZAL), which accounted for 51.3% of the passengers traveling abroad. TOP five foreign airlines are: Turkish Airlines, «Aeroflot», S7 Airlines, FlyDubai and Qatar Airways.

Istanbul, Moscow, Dubai and Kiev topped the list of most popular international destinations - in the past year, passenger traffic in the city amounted to 1.37 million passengers.

In 2016, Baku became new destination for Iraqi Airways, Fly Baghdad, ATA Airlines, Air Cairo, «Komiaviatrans" as well as the Russian  "Pobeda".

New airport terminal Heydar Aliyev International Airport (Terminal 1) airport terminal became operational in April 2014. Its total area is 65 thousand square meters.

Heydar Aliyev International Airport was awarded the prestigious category of "4 stars" by the Skytrax, an influential British consulting company specializing in the study of the quality of services provided by various airlines and airports worldwide.
